Arsene Wenger

The 61-year-old has been at the club’s helm for the best part of 15 years, overseeing both the transition from one stadium (the much-loved Highbury) to another and the transition of the club from one very much grounded in the British way of doing things to perhaps the most continental-minded in the Premier League. Such changes have brought success in the past for Wenger, but the club are now five seasons without a trophy, and the pressure is rapidly growing for that to change.

MANAGER

Pep Guardiola

At just 39 years old, Guardiola is the youngest manager to win the Champions League and in 2009, became the first coach in history to win six trophies in one calendar year. He has a perfect record of five wins against Real Madrid as a coach, and the 5-0 victory on 29 November 2010 allowed Barca to leapfrog their arch nemesis to the top of the table in La Liga. He has stayed true to Barcelona's football philosophy while also retaining the 4-3-3 system, while continually bringing through young talent from the cantera.

Cesc Fabregas

Samir Nasri has stepped up to the plate in the Spaniard’s recent absence, but in simple terms everything inventive for the Gunners comes through Fabregas, and his guile and tenacity will be vital if the Gunners are to assert themselves against ever-stiffer opposition. Will be eager to impress against well-known suitors.

Mental strength. Arsenal’s performances — notably in last season’s first leg comeback against Barcelona — show that, at their best, they can beat anyone. But, especially in the big games, they rarely rise to the occasion — a problem that has cost them on all fronts for the last five seasons. Fans are beginning to wonder if that will ever change.

DANGERMAN

TEAM WEAKNESS

Lionel Messi

Easily the best player in the world at the moment, and already constantly considered one of the greatest of all time. Messi can change a game at any moment with his dazzling dribbling skills, his close control of the ball in tight situations, and his hunger for goals. He scored six goals in six Champions League appearances in the group stage.

Lapses of concentration in defence - Barca have been caught out on a number of occassions this season. Their attacking approach to the game often leaves gaps down the wings while Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique defend with a high line, leaving the team susceptible to opponents who play a direct, counter-attacking style of football.

Thomas Vermaelen and Cesc Fabregas are two key players that have suffered with injuries so far this season, but both are scheduled to be back well in time for the two ties and no other senior players are ruled out. The Gunners could well have an FA Cup fifth round match and Premier League game at Tottenham either side of the first leg, which could affect Wenger’s plans.

FEBRUARY FORECAST

Barca have no serious injury or suspension concerns ahead of the last 16, but their lack of squad depth could be a major issue if more than one key player picks up an injury before then. Starting off 2011, they will have Levante, Deportivo, Malaga, Racing Santander, Hercules, Atletico Madrid, and Sporting Gijon for company in La Liga and a second leg clash away from home against Athletic Bilbao in the Copa del Rey.

Despite Arsenal players' repeated assertions that a rematch with Barcelona was the tie they wanted, the club's hierarchy will be fair less enthused at the draw they have been given. The Spaniards tore the north Londoners apart at the Nou Camp last season at the same stage, and only seemed to have got stronger since. Arsenal, meanwhile, have the same frailties — defensively, and with their big game mentality — but there will still be a hope that a full-strength side determined to gain revenge could well spring a major upset. The form and fitness of the likes of Fabregas, Vermaelen and Robin van Persie will be key, if they are to beat the masters of the intricate passing game they have long tried to emulate. Wenger will be disappointed with the draw, but might feel a victory against such an illustrious side might provide his players with the self-belief needed to win major trophiers they currently seem to be lacking.

EXPERT ANALYSIS

Barcelona are of course favourites to win the tournament outright, but they have been handed a draw they would have perhaps looked to avoid in the form of Arsenal, in what is arguably the tie of the round. The omens, however, are positive for the Blaugrana, particularly given the manner in which they dismantled the Gunners at the Camp Nou last season at the quarter-final stage. Four-goal Lionel Messi put them to the sword on that occasion, and given the defensive frailties plaguing Arsene Wenger’s side this season, the Argentine will prove extremely difficult to contain. The London club employ a similar attacking philosophy to Pep Guardiola’s side, and this is likely to play into the hands of the 2009 winners - the ruthlessness of the Spanish giants in front of goal, and the manner in which they have swept aside all opponents in this campaign, suggests that Arsenal could be the next victims of this incredible team

Arsenal vs Barcelona Match Preview

Arsenal will play host to Barcelona on Wednesday hoping to avoid a repeat of last season’s Champions League Quarter-Final. Barcelona beat Arsenal 6-3 on aggregate to end the Gunners European campaign last season, the game at the Emirates Stadium finished in a 4-1 win for the Spanish club.

Star midfielder Samir Nasri looks set to return for Arsenal, while Tomas Rosicky also returns to Arsene Wenger’s squad. Abou Diaby is ruled out with a calf injury, while Johan Djorou looks set to continue in defense.

Djourou and his fellow defenders will have a tough task on their hands to contain Lionel Messi. The Argentine superstar will play and scored six goals in as many games during the group stages, Messi also scored all four goals in last season’s win at the Emirates. Barcelona will be without defender Carles Puyol, who is sidelined with a knee injury.

Arsenal cruised to a two goal victory over a struggling Wolverhampton side that included a brace from Robin van Persie, who has scored nine goals in his last five league games. It could have been much more, but Arsenal were not made to rue for those missed opportunities by the likes of Theo Walcott, Cesc Fabregas and Andrei Arshavin.
